In the 11th century the Chinese developed rockets. The figured they could use gunpowder for fuel. The Chinese realized this design of a rocket could be used in the defense of their Wall of China. They would tie the rockets to an bow an arrow and it would increase the power and distance it covered with a rocket attached. In 1812 the British designed their own version of the rocket. The success of the British's design helped increase the range of the rocket to 3,000 yards. When World War I started, America worked on perfecting the rocket. The war ended before the United States had a chance to use them on German tanks.
